The history of roulette is long, and depending on who you ask quite colorful, with many different stories about its origins.
Roulette and its Supposed Beginnings
First, the facts. The term roulette means small wheel in French, which is fitting given that the game is played on a small wheel. The roulette that we know and love today was first seen and played in Paris in 1765. It was French immigrants that imported the game into the United states where the game first appeared in an American casino in 1800. In 1861, a casino was opened in Monaco and that quickly became the gambling capital as casinos were banned in Europe in 1873. The game quickly caught on when it was brought over from France and has exploded into a world wide phenomenon since then.
There are many interesting stories or legends about how roulette got started. One of the most commonly told legends says that a man by the name of Francois Blanc founded casinos in Monte Carlo. The story goes onto say that he sold his soul to the devil for the secret of roulette. Many people believe in this legend due to the fact that the sum of all of the numbers on the wheel is 666.

When a friend saw the wheel he came up with the idea that this was a great device for gambling, and so was the birth of the roulette wheel.
