Roulette Rules, the House Advantage, and Payouts

The En Prison Rule
This is a rule that is used on even money bets only by some brick and mortar as well as online casinos.  This rule is used when the outcome is zero.  The casino may allow the player to take back his half of the bet or leave the bet for another spin.  If the second spin is again a zero, the whole bet is lost.

The La Partage Rule
The La Partage rule is often confused for the en prison rule because it is similar.  In the La Partage rule if the outcome is zero the player loses half of the bet and does not have the option of leaving the bet "en prison" for another spin.  Many casinos do not use this type of betting because it cuts the house edge on bets on the even money bets in half.

Payouts and Odds

• A bet on just one number is called a straight up bet and pays 35 to 1.
• A two number bet is called a split bet and it pays 17 to 1.
• A three number bet is called a street bet and pays 11 to 1.
• A four number bet is called a corner bet and pays 8 to 1.
• A six number bet pays 5 to 1.
• A bet on the outside dozen or column pays 2 to 1.
• A bet on the outside even money bets pays one to one.

The House Advantage (House Edge)

The house advantage in the game of roulette is considerable.  If you play on a single zero table the house advantage is 2.7%.  If you play on a double zero roulette table the house advantage is 5.26 to 7.9%.  The way that this works is that if you do win, you will be paid a chip or two less than you have actually won.  This is how the casino ensures that they stay in business, even when you win time and time again.
